About Us
The original Partridges was opened on 25th May 1972 by Sir Richard Shepherd in the fashionable area of Sloane Street in Chelsea, and quickly gained a reputation for selling the best quality foods from British producers and importing food and wines from all over the world.
The company slogan was, and still is, ‘good things for the larder’.
Today, Partridges is still very much a family-run business with Sir Richard’s brother, John Shepherd, now the Managing Director. In fact, it is one of the few remaining family-run food shops in Central London and still cherishes its original idea of providing the very finest quality foods.
Currently located on Gloucester Road where its branch features a specialty food and wines, a delicatessen counter, American groceries and a huge range of confectionery and gifting.
Partridges was awarded its Royal Warrant in 1994 by Appointment to HM The Queen. Today, firms that hold the Royal Warrant include grocers like Partridges, wine merchants, chemists, plumbers, mole catchers and dressmakers. The distinguishing feature, no matter the size of the company, is to provide the highest standards of service.
In 2004, the flagship store previously located on the Duke of York Square on the Kings Road, featured a café, a delicatessen counter, a weekly Saturday Fine Food Market and a huge range of American groceries.
On Saturday 29th October 2005, Partridges created and curated the Duke of York Square Fine Food Market until February 2025, with an aim to celebrate the diverse and evolving world of fine, local, British and international foods and offer small producers, start-up businesses and farmers the chance to share their passion and expertise with the public.
Starting off with 15 stalls, our market community comprised of on average 70 diverse stalls every Saturday. Since then, Partridges ran nearly 1,000 markets, and invited hundreds of start-up artisans to attend and launch their businesses.
In December 2024, Partridges was awarded a Royal Warrant as Grocers by Appointment to HM The King. In the same month, Partridges achieved carbon neutrality.
In January 2025, Partridges announced the decision to transfer its business to its shop at Partridges of Kensington in Gloucester Road. On 2nd February 2025, it closed its doors for the final time.
Partridges now looks forward in the future to build smaller and more sustainable shop formats across London as well as build on their online platforms.
